Exchange-traded funds transformed investing by placing a portfolio behind a single tradable share. Instead of selecting and managing every asset individually, an investor can buy one product and let the fund follow its mandate.

DeFi vaults make a similar promise for onchain finance.

Rather than choosing individual lending markets, monitoring collateral, moving funds between protocols, and repeatedly claiming rewards, a user deposits an asset into a vault. The vault issues shares and deploys the capital according to a defined strategy. When the user leaves, those shares are redeemed for a portion of the vault’s assets.

In that limited sense, vaults are beginning to look like “ETFs for DeFi.” They turn a complicated strategy into a product people can recognize, compare, and potentially access with one click.

But the analogy has limits. A vault share is not necessarily exchange-traded, diversified, regulated, liquid, or protected like an ETF. The wrapper makes DeFi easier to use; it does not make the underlying strategy safer.

What Is a DeFi Vault?

A DeFi vault is a pooled, usually smart-contract-based product that manages deposited crypto according to a strategy.

The basic process is simple:

  1. You deposit an asset such as USDC.
  2. The vault gives you shares representing your portion of the pool.
  3. The strategy deploys the pooled funds into lending markets or other yield sources.
  4. Earnings—or losses—change the value of each share.
  5. You redeem your shares to withdraw the underlying asset, subject to the vault’s liquidity rules.

A lending vault, for example, might allocate USDC across several lending markets. Its manager or “curator” chooses which markets are acceptable, sets exposure limits, and reallocates funds as rates and risks change.

That saves depositors from evaluating every borrower market, collateral asset, oracle, and liquidation parameter themselves. The vault packages those decisions into a product.

The tradeoff is delegation. Even when the curator does not directly custody the funds, depositors still rely on its market selection, controls, monitoring, and response to changing conditions.

In What Sense Is a Vault Like an ETF?

The comparison works because both structures turn a collection of underlying positions into shares.

  • Investor action: ETF investors buy a fund share; vault users deposit into or acquire vault shares.
  • Underlying exposure: ETFs hold securities or other fund assets; vaults can use lending markets, liquidity pools, trading positions, staking, or tokenized credit.
  • Management: ETFs follow index rules or an investment adviser; vaults rely on smart-contract rules, a curator, an allocator, or an automated strategy.
  • Accounting: Both represent a proportional claim on a pool of assets.
  • Main benefit: ETFs simplify portfolio access, while vaults simplify strategy access.
  • Exit: ETF shares normally sell on an exchange; vault shares are commonly redeemed directly, subject to available liquidity.

Both products pool capital. Both give investors proportional exposure to underlying assets or activity. Both can make a professionally managed strategy accessible without requiring the investor to reproduce every transaction.

The difference is what the wrapper contains.

An ETF might hold a diversified basket of stocks. A stablecoin lending vault might hold positions across several markets that all depend on the same collateral, oracle, stablecoin, bridge, or lending protocol. It can look diversified by position count while remaining concentrated around one failure point.

A vault is therefore better understood as a strategy wrapper than as a conventional fund.

How Lending Vaults Work

Lending vaults are currently the clearest example of the model because the yield source is relatively easy to explain: borrowers pay interest to use deposited assets.

Consider a hypothetical USDC vault built on Morpho:

  • Depositors supply USDC and receive vault shares.
  • The vault allocates that USDC among approved Morpho lending markets.
  • Each market may use different collateral, price feeds, and liquidation settings.
  • Borrower interest accrues to the vault.
  • The curator changes allocations within the vault’s permitted risk limits.
  • Some capital may remain idle or readily withdrawable to meet redemptions.

The curator is not simply chasing the market with the highest displayed rate. It must decide whether the additional yield justifies the collateral, liquidity, oracle, and liquidation risks.

It must also balance yield against withdrawal liquidity. Capital left idle generally earns less, but a vault that deploys almost everything may struggle to process withdrawals during a rush for the exit.

This is why a vault’s displayed APY does not tell the whole story. Two USDC vaults can advertise similar rates while taking materially different risks. Readers can compare the wider market through our stablecoin yield tracker, but rates should always be traced back to their actual source.

The Major Vault Models

Yearn: Automated Yield Aggregation

Yearn helped popularize the vault model during DeFi’s early growth. Its vaults pool assets and use strategies intended to generate and compound yield.

The core idea remains influential: users should not need to claim rewards, rebalance positions, or constantly move funds between protocols themselves. Yearn packages those actions behind a deposit.

This is closer to an automated yield optimizer than a traditional ETF. The strategy may change how funds are deployed, and returns depend on DeFi market conditions rather than the performance of a passive securities index.

Morpho and Gauntlet: Curated Lending

Morpho separates lending into individual markets instead of placing every borrower and collateral type into one large shared pool. That gives lenders more choice, but it also creates more decisions than many depositors want to make.

Vaults restore simplicity on top of those isolated markets. A curator selects acceptable exposures and manages allocations for the depositor.

Gauntlet is among the most visible professional curators using this model. Its vault lineup includes different risk profiles across stablecoins, BTC-related assets, and ETH-related assets. As of July 2026, Gauntlet reported more than $1.3 billion in lending-vault TVL across over 50 vaults.

The combination resembles an asset-management stack: Morpho provides the lending infrastructure, the vault provides the pooled vehicle and accounting, a curator defines and manages the risk strategy, and wallets or financial apps distribute the finished product.

Veda: Vault Infrastructure Behind “Earn”

Not every user encounters a vault through a DeFi website. Infrastructure providers such as Veda allow exchanges, wallets, and financial apps to embed vault-based yield behind a simpler “Earn” interface.

For the customer, the experience may be little more than selecting an asset and tapping a button. Behind the interface, a vault can route deposits into one or more onchain strategies.

This is one reason vaults could become more important than their name recognition suggests. Users may interact with vaults without knowing that a vault is powering the product.

It also creates a longer risk chain. The app, vault infrastructure, curator, underlying protocols, assets, oracles, and bridges may all affect the outcome. A clean interface does not reduce the number of dependencies behind it.

Hyperliquid HLP: A Trading Vault

Not all vault yield comes from lending.

Hyperliquid’s HLP is a protocol-owned vault that provides market-making liquidity, participates in liquidations, supplies USDC to Earn, and receives part of the platform’s trading fees. Depositors participate in the vault’s profit and loss rather than receiving straightforward borrower interest.

That makes HLP closer to a public market-making strategy than a savings product. The distinction matters: trading-vault returns can be affected by inventory, volatility, trader profits, liquidations, and execution.

A single “APY” label can make a lending vault and a trading vault appear comparable even though their economic risks are entirely different.

The Main Types of DeFi Vault

Lending Vaults

These allocate stablecoins, ETH, BTC-related tokens, or other assets to lending markets. Yield primarily comes from borrower interest and may be supplemented by token incentives.

Main risks include bad debt, weak collateral, faulty oracles, liquidations, utilization spikes, and limited withdrawal liquidity.

Trading and Market-Making Vaults

These use pooled funds to trade, make markets, process liquidations, or provide liquidity to exchanges. Returns may come from fees, spreads, funding, and trading profit.

Depositors can also share in losses. Historical APY may be especially misleading because performance depends on future market conditions.

Liquidity-Provision Vaults

These place assets in decentralized exchange pools and may automatically rebalance or compound fees.

Returns depend on trading activity and incentives, while losses can come from adverse price moves, impermanent loss, pool design, or smart-contract failures.

RWA and Private-Credit Vaults

These connect onchain deposits to Treasury-linked assets, institutional lending, private credit, insurance, or other offchain activity.

They can diversify the source of yield, but they add counterparties, legal agreements, servicing arrangements, identity requirements, and slower redemption processes. Onchain accounting does not make the offchain assets instantly liquid.

Structured and Options Vaults

These automate strategies such as covered calls, protected-upside products, or other derivatives trades.

They can make sophisticated strategies easier to enter, but easier access does not make those strategies simple. Users need to understand what upside they surrender, what losses remain possible, and how positions behave during sharp price moves.

Staking products can also use vault-like wrappers, but native staking rewards should not be confused with lending, trading, or liquidity-provision returns. For a broader comparison of categories, see CIR’s crypto vault guide.

Where the ETF Analogy Breaks

A Vault May Not Be Diversified

A vault holding ten positions is not necessarily protected from concentration risk. All ten could rely on the same stablecoin, collateral token, bridge, oracle, curator, or protocol.

Count the independent risk sources, not just the number of positions.

Vault Shares May Not Trade on an Exchange

ETF shares normally trade throughout the market day. Many vault users instead enter and exit by depositing or redeeming directly with a smart contract.

If the underlying positions are illiquid, withdrawals may be delayed, limited, or expensive. A share token does not guarantee a liquid secondary market.

The Strategy Can Introduce Active Risk

Some vaults allow curators or allocators to change markets, limits, and exposures. That can be valuable when conditions change, but it also means depositors depend on the manager’s judgment and operational security.

Review what the manager can change, whether changes are delayed by a timelock, and whether users have a realistic opportunity to exit first.

The APY May Include Temporary Incentives

A vault’s displayed return can combine organic borrower interest, trading fees, token rewards, stablecoin issuer incentives, chain subsidies, leverage, or gains from an active strategy.

Incentive-funded APY can disappear when a campaign ends. Leveraged or trading-based APY can turn negative.

The Investor Protections Are Different

Registered ETFs generally operate under securities rules covering disclosures, portfolio management, liquidity, leverage, custody, and reporting. A permissionless DeFi vault may offer transparent onchain positions but none of the same legal structure or investor remedies.

Onchain transparency is valuable, but transparency is not the same as protection. A user can sometimes see a risky allocation in real time and still be unable to exit before losses occur.

How to Evaluate a DeFi Vault

1. Identify the Real Source of Yield

Ask who is paying and why. Is the return funded by borrowers, trading fees, option premiums, token emissions, an offchain borrower, or a marketing campaign? If the answer is unclear, the APY is not yet meaningful.

2. Separate Base Yield From Incentives

Look for a breakdown between the underlying strategy return and bonus rewards. Check when incentives expire and what the vault would earn without them.

3. Inspect the Underlying Positions

Find out which protocols, markets, collateral assets, stablecoins, bridges, and oracles the vault uses. Pay particular attention to nested exposure: a vault may hold another yield-bearing token that is itself backed by several additional strategies.

4. Research the Curator

Check who selects the markets and manages risk. Look for a public methodology, monitoring process, incident history, team track record, and clear explanation of responsibilities.

“Noncustodial” does not mean “trustless.” A curator may not hold the assets directly while still controlling important investment decisions.

5. Review the Curator’s Powers

Can the curator add new protocols, increase exposure limits, change fees, restrict access, or appoint another allocator?

Check whether major changes are subject to a timelock and whether that delay is long enough for depositors to react.

6. Understand Liquidity and Redemptions

Do not assume “withdraw anytime” means the vault can always return the full amount immediately.

Review how much capital normally remains liquid, whether withdrawals rely on borrowers repaying, whether there is a queue or lockup, what happens during heavy redemptions, and whether withdrawals can force positions to close at a loss.

7. Compare Every Fee

Vaults can charge management, performance, withdrawal, platform, or embedded distribution fees. Underlying protocols may take their own fees as well.

A vault that earns more before fees can deliver less after the full stack is paid.

8. Look Beyond Audits

Audits reduce some code risk but do not guarantee that a strategy is safe. They may not cover later contract changes, risky collateral, bad economic design, compromised admin keys, or failures in an integrated protocol.

Review audits alongside bug bounties, admin controls, monitoring, insurance, and dependencies outside the audited contract.

9. Examine Historical Losses, Not Just APY

For trading vaults, look at maximum drawdown, losing periods, open exposure, and how performance changed during volatile markets.

For lending vaults, investigate bad debt, depegs, frozen withdrawals, and how the curator responded to troubled collateral.

10. Start With the Failure Scenario

Ask what would have to happen for the vault to lose money or prevent a withdrawal. If the answer requires tracing five layers of wrappers, the product may be too complex to judge from its headline rate.

A Brief Regulatory Note

Vault regulation remains highly dependent on jurisdiction and product design.

A fixed, automated smart contract may raise different questions from a vault whose manager actively selects investments and charges management or performance fees. Products offered directly through consumer apps can also involve different obligations from permissionless contracts accessed through a self-custodied wallet.

Describing a product as decentralized, automated, or noncustodial does not by itself determine its legal status. Nor should users assume that a vault has the disclosures, oversight, insurance, or remedies associated with a registered fund or bank account.

Platforms and managers offering vault access should obtain advice for the jurisdictions they serve. Users should verify eligibility and disclosures rather than treating the ETF comparison as a regulatory label.

Will Vaults Become DeFi’s ETFs?

Vaults solve a real problem. DeFi offers many sources of yield, but directly managing them is too complex for most users. Vaults turn that complexity into a product that wallets, exchanges, fintech apps, institutions, and individual investors can integrate.

Standard interfaces such as ERC-4626 make that packaging easier. Curators add professional risk selection. Infrastructure providers make strategies available inside familiar apps.

That combination could make vaults a major distribution layer for onchain finance.

But vaults are not automatically diversified funds, and the simplicity of the interface can work against investors. A deposit button and an APY can compress several layers of smart-contract, curator, liquidity, collateral, and counterparty risk into two numbers.

So are vaults crypto’s DeFi ETFs?

As a product idea, increasingly yes: they turn strategies into shares and make complicated markets easier to access.

As an investment and regulatory comparison, not quite. Vaults package DeFi risk; they do not remove it.

The best vault is therefore not necessarily the one with the highest APY. It is the one whose yield source, permissions, liquidity, fees, and failure modes you can clearly understand.
