HSBC has unveiled HSBC RedCoin, the name of its forthcoming Hong Kong-dollar stablecoin, as it prepares a rollout focused initially on everyday transfers and merchant payments.

HSBC says it has not yet issued any stablecoins in Hong Kong and plans to launch in the second half of 2026, initially through PayMe and the HSBC HK Mobile App.

Payments first, with investment access also planned

HSBC’s product page describes person-to-person transfers and payments to participating merchants through PayMe. It also outlines using RedCoin to subscribe to tokenized investment products through the HSBC HK App.

The bank says each token will be fully backed by high-quality, liquid assets held separately and designed for redemption at one Hong Kong dollar per RedCoin. Its page still describes the service as forthcoming. Source: HSBC RedCoin product page

The planned integration illustrates how stablecoin banking can bring digital assets into familiar payment apps. Actual usefulness will depend on the final access rules, merchant coverage and conversion terms.

HSBC’s survey of 1,060 Hong Kong customers found that 74% recognized at least one stablecoin use case. However, 10% believed stablecoins were interest-bearing—a feature HSBC says is outside Hong Kong’s current regulatory framework. The survey reflects HSBC customers rather than the entire Hong Kong population.

HSBC also warns that it has no connection to fraudulent stablecoins claiming an association with the bank. Until official availability is confirmed, a token advertised elsewhere as “HSBC RedCoin” should not be treated as the announced product.
